How do I choose a suitable pulling harness?

First we recommend you take a look at our Selecting and fitting a sled dog harness guide. Choosing the right model and size starts with measuring the dog.

We are also happy to help find the potential options for your dog, even before you place an online store order. Please contact our customer service.

Which pulling harness is suitable for a small dog?

Most traditional pulling harnesses are made for large or medium breeds.

Sizes small enough for small dogs can be found in the Inlandis Open-Back and Non-stop Freemotion models.

If you need additional help or confirmation when choosing a size, please get in touch .

A pulling harness for a dog that doesn't pull?

If your dog does not have a tendency to pull and the dog jogs next to you or in front of you mainly without pulling, the shorter standard Y-harness is usually the most functional and easiest solution. You can also read more about it on our pulling harness page . If you are not sure what to choose, we are happy to help!

If your dog is an enthusiastic puller and/or you want to teach him to pull, it is absolutely important for him to have a good and suitable pulling harness due to ergonomics.

Which bike antenna fits my bike?

The most common way of attaching the bike antenna, and suitable for most modern mountain bikes, is around the steerer tube, but there are other options available as well. This is affected by eg. the shape of the bikes frame.

Have a look at our bike antenna buying guide. You can also send us a side view photo of your bike and tell us about your needs, and we'll help you choose the right model.

How do I choose the right size booties for my dog?

According to our experience, you get the most suitable booties when you measure the circumference of your dog's paw while the dog is standing, and then divide the result by two. This measurement is compared to the actual width of the slipper (see the measurement table on the product page). Remember that the booties must always have a little extra width so that the dog's paw can spread freely when the dog steps.

Measuring only the width of the paw does not give a good result, because it does not take into account the height of the dog's paw.

How do I choose the right kickbike/scooter for me?

With scooters, the height of the rider has very little meaning. For example, riders between 150-190 cm tall can very well ride the same model. Of course there are exceptions, but the selection should be done based on intended use and budget.

You can read more about the differences between the models in our kickbike/scooter buying guide . We are also happy to help you choose a model that fits your (and your dog's) needs and budget.

I'm not quite sure about the fit of the product, could I get some help?

Absolutely! The easiest way is to send us a message on Whatsapp or email with the pictures of your pup wearing the product.

If it is a dog (pulling)harness, see the instructions for taking a fitting photo at the end of our harness page. In order to be able to see the correct fit, there must be a proper tension in the harness.

Getting started

I'm not sure we'll get excited about sled dog sports. Can I start without first buying the equipment?

In pulling sports, having the right size and suitable equipment is a key factor for both comfort and safety - both for you and your dog. Think of it this way: if you wanted to start running, going for the first jog with wrong size sneakers would probably not make you want to go again.

If it seems that your dog could get excited about the sport, we recommend getting the equipment for pulling as soon as possible, at the latest after the initial trials.

Especially pulling belt and bungee line can be also used for more casual "handsfree" walks and hikes so they're not waste of money even if you wouldn't do pulling sports after all.

Where can you ski with a dog? (skijoring)

In many countries, skiing with a dog (skijoring) is possible only on ski tracks where it is specifically allowed. In other words; if it is not mentioned to be allowed, you can expect it to not be.

Tha being said, this is not always the case and you should always check from whoever is maintaining the skiing tracks if it is okay to ski with a dog. Also, skiing on natural ice such as on lakes is usually free to do so with dogs as well.

In Finland, most of the skiing tracks are prohibited from dogs, but there are many that are allowed either anytime or at a specific time/day of the week. You can find a map with skiing tracks that allow dogs in Finland by clicking here.

How do I teach my dog to pull?

Many dogs naturally get excited about pulling. Some dogs may need a little encouragement to catch on. You can find tips on how to start with pulling sports on our page Dog running/Canicross.

There are many ways to teach your dog to pull, but usually it is a variation of something like this;

1. Place a toy or a treat at 10-15 meters away from your dog, and let them run there to be rewarded
2. Add a sensation of pulling, by holding a leash attached to their harness and running behind them. Remember to encourage them to run/pull to that toy/treat
3. Increase the distance to that reward slowly - 20 m, 50 m, 100 meters.
4. Keep the exercise short and always stop before the dog get exhausted or distracted. This usually means just 2-4 pulls at first.

It is always important to start with easy, short excercises and to build up once you and your dog get more confident and fit. Too long or too hard training too early may cause your dog to loose motivation or even risk an injury.

Use of equipment

The pulling harness has a string loop at the base of the dog's tail? Why and Can I take it off?

The loop is there to serve as the attachment point for the bungee leash. This way, the rubbing stress caused by the lock is directed to the easily replaceable cord loop and does not wear out other parts of the harness.

The loop also has another function. By adjusting its length, dogs of different sizes (in a team) running side by side can be leveled to be shoulder to shoulder. In small harnesses, the loop is therefore long and in large harnesses correspondingly short.

How do I attach the bungee leash to a bike or scooter?

Most commonly, the bungee is wrapped around the front part of the bike frame or the steerer tube, using the leashes hand loop as an aid.

Some antenna models can also have a separate metal loop for attaching the bungee at their base.

The bungee leash should never be attached to the loop at the end of the antennas spring, it should just pass freely through it. The spring is there only to guide the bungee out of the wheel.

Do I attach the bungee's lock to the dog's harness or to the canicross belt?

The pulling bungee's lock is always attached to the dog's harness.

For safety reasons, it is not recommended (and not even allowed in competitions) to have any metal part, i.e. a ring or a lock, attached to the end of the bungee. This is because if the stretched elastic bungee accidentally comes off, e.g. from the handler's hand, the metal part in the hand loop could hit and injure the dog.

How do I put a coat on my dog in addition to a harness?

The most effective solution is to wear a jacket over the pulling harness.

Well-fitting harnesses are so tight that usually only a thin protective shirt fits comfortably under them. Thicker jackets are therefore always worn on top of the harness.
