Tips for using a brake mat
When the mat is up, it is easiest to lower it from one of the two upper edges of the mat with your heel: the technique is refined by doing. Anticipation is also worthwhile: lowering the brake is easier on a flat surface than in the middle of a downhill.
The length of the rubber band can be used to regulate how high the brake mat rises. If you don't have to kick much yourself, with a longer rubber band, the brake mat is closer to your feet and can be pushed down faster. On the other hand, if you kick more than you brake, the shorter rubber band will lift the mat higher out of the way.
